CBIAMEC Partners with EFCC to Strengthen Budget Monitoring and Implementation

The CSOs Budget Implementation Assessment, Monitoring and Evaluation Committee (CBIAMEC) has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s budget implementation by partnering with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

On Thursday, February 6, 2025, in Abuja, Ambassador Splendor Agbonkpolor led a delegation of civil society organizations (CSOs) to a courtesy visit at the EFCC corporate headquarters, where they met with the Executive Chairman, Mr. Ola Olukoyede. The delegation emphasized the critical role of budget monitoring in national development and expressed their dedication to collaborating with the EFCC to enhance financial accountability.

Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Agbonkpolor highlighted that CBIAMEC, a coalition of civil society organizations, was established to focus on monitoring budget implementation, assessing its effectiveness, identifying gaps, and advocating for necessary reforms. “Our mandate is to monitor budget implementation, promote transparency, provide evidence-based reports, collaborate with stakeholders, and support capacity building,” he stated.

He further stressed the importance of joint efforts in combating corruption, particularly in procurement processes. “Corruption starts from procurement. If corruption is tackled from the point of procurement down to the implementation stage, the amount of money lost to fraudulent activities will be significantly reduced. Our work has shown that despite large sums allocated for projects, many sites remain undeveloped. By reporting such anomalies to the EFCC, we aim to ensure appropriate investigations and accountability,” Agbonkpolor noted.

The Executive Chairman of EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, commended the initiative, emphasizing the necessity of collaborative efforts in the fight against corruption. “Fighting corruption is not the work of law enforcement or anti-corruption agencies alone. This is why I deeply appreciate your initiative. Your support strengthens our mission, and I can guarantee you our full cooperation,” Olukoyede remarked.

He further assured the delegation that the EFCC remains committed to working closely with CBIAMEC to ensure effective budget monitoring and implementation. “Budget implementation and monitoring are crucial. We will ensure that our collaboration remains strong and impactful,” he added.

CBIAMEC believes that through this partnership with the EFCC, accountability in budget execution will be reinforced, leading to better service delivery and national development.
